Grouting Instructions

These grouting instructions are for a 10 x 10 cm mosaic, with 1 to 3 mm gaps between tiles, such as for a children’s workshop.

For a larger mosaic and different joint thicknesses, adapt the amount of grout.

First, make sure all your tiles are well stuck and will not fall out during grouting.

Mix 5 heaped teaspoons of grout powder with 4 teaspoons of water, until you obtain a toothpaste consistency, without lumps. Stir well. With a small spatula or artist’s knife, or any spreading utensil, apply the paste over the entire mosaic, pushing the grout paste into the gaps. Once all the gaps are filled, wait 5 to 10 minutes for the grout to start setting. Wipe the surface clean with a kitchen paper, until all the tiles are visible and most of the grout has been removed from the surface. Wait another 15 minutes or more, and wipe clean again, this time with a slightly damp sponge. Rinse well and repeat, until the mosaic is clean. Wait a few hours to 24 h, and clean vigorously with a scratch sponge or metal sponge to remove any remaining stains, using a little white wine vinegar to make the tiles shine.

If tiles come off during grouting, leave them out and grout the rest of the mosaic. Once it is clean and before waiting 24 h, re-glue the missing piece and wait until it is completely dry to regrout that area.
